Sinus Problems After A Root Canal: Is This Normal? What Should I Do?

If you’ve recently had a root canal performed on one of your upper teeth, you may be experiencing some sinus problems. Is this normal? Will the problems go away? When should you see a Fort Mill dentist for a follow-up?

Here’s everything you need to know if you’re having sinus problems after a root canal:

What Is A “Sinus Communication”?

Some minor sinus issues are actually quite common after root canal treatment. If your symptoms are minor, this is nothing to be alarmed about. You may experience symptoms like:

  • Feeling fluid go into your nose when you drink
  • Feeling air moving across the tooth socket when you breathe
  • Sinus pressure or congestion
  • Post-nasal drip
  • A runny nose

The cause of these sinus issues is known as “sinus communication.” This term means that there is a very small hole in your sinus lining. The sinus lining is very close to the root of your back teeth. This lining is quite delicate, so in some surgeries, like tooth extractions and root canals, it’s possible that the sinus lining may accidentally be punctured. This creates a sinus communication.

This issue usually resolves itself quite quickly without any need for intervention. Your body can easily repair a small puncture in the sinus lining. Your symptoms should subside within a few days.

More Serious Sinus Problems May Indicate A Deeper Issue

A minor sinus communication is no cause for concern. But what if the issue is deeper? It is possible that you have a larger hole in your sinus lining, which may not heal on its own. This is quite rare unless your dentist was careless during the root canal treatment process.

A larger hole in your sinus lining may have more severe symptoms. Follow-up with a dentist if you notice things like:

  • Sinus problems that are getting worse or have not gone away within 3-5 days of your root canal treatment
  • Signs of a sinus infection (sinusitis)
  • Pain and discomfort in the sinus area near your tooth
  • A musty, metallic taste in the nose, throat or mouth, which could indicate infection
  • Presence of blood or pus in the nasal mucus or nose

These issues may indicate that you have a serious sinus issue and that your tooth may not have been treated properly to resolve the infection. See an experienced dentist like Dr. Luck for treatment right away.
