Food That Prevent Tooth Decay: Focus on Calcium & Fiber!

When most people think of oral hygiene, they envision brushing and flossing. While these are obviously critical parts of a healthy oral care routine, diet also plays a large role in the health of our teeth. Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but it can be damaged by prolonged contact with sugar, acid, and other harmful substances. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you want to make sure that your meals and snacks are keeping your teeth strong:

Calcium: Dairy & Leafy Greens

One of the best nutrients for your teeth is calcium. It is common knowledge that calcium helps build bones throughout the body and provides structural support. When it comes to your smile, calcium helps harden your tooth enamel and strengthen your jawbone. 

Need more calcium in your diet? Focus on these snacks:

  • Greens: Kale, bok choy, and broccoli are all great ways to consume calcium.
  • Dairy: Yogurt, milk, and all kinds of cheese are tasty and calcium-rich.
  • Seafood: Shrimp and salmon are high in calcium and make a great dinner!

Fruits, Veggies, & Fibrous Snacks

Fibrous foods create a healthy environment for your teeth and gums because they get saliva flowing. This is helpful when it comes to your dental health because your saliva contains traces of calcium and phosphate. Essentially, this restores minerals to areas of your teeth that have lost them as a result of acids and sugars.

Some fibrous snacks to help you maintain a healthy smile:

  • Legumes, Nuts & Seeds: Split peas, lentils, black beans, and chia seeds have 10-15 grams of fiber per cup!
  • Fruits: Apples with the skin, pears, raspberries and bananas are all high in fiber.
  • Veggies: Enjoy green peas, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and potato with the skin.
  • Grains: Barley, bran flakes, and quinoa are all a great source of fiber!
